DETROIT LAKES — Bail was set Monday, May 9 for the man accused of crashing his pickup truck into a Detroit Lakes motel room on May 7 and seriously injuring two people who were inside.
Wade Alfred Olds, 53, of Detroit Lakes had cash bail set at $15,000, or bond at $150,000 with a number of conditions of release, or $500,000 with no conditions of release.
On Monday, he posted a $15,000 cashier’s check and was released, under standard conditions that include not using illegal drugs or alcohol, staying out of bars and liquor stores, using an alcohol monitor at his own expense, and having no contact with the two people who were injured in the crash.
A request for a public defender was denied on Monday, and Fergus Falls attorney Anthony M. Bussa is representing him.
Olds has been charged in Becker County District Court with two felonies: Criminal vehicular operation, great bodily harm, under influence of alcohol; and failing to stop after a collision that caused injury or death.

Detroit Lakes residents Frank Benninger, 77, and Jacklyn Benninger, 77, were apparently both resting in bed when the truck struck their room at the Lakes Inn motel on West Lake Drive — theirs was the closest unit to the street in the 10-unit motel.
Emergency responders pulled the Benningers from the damaged room and they were transported to Essentia Health St. Mary’s in Detroit Lakes, then transferred to hospitals in Fargo with serious injuries.
Olds is accused of leaving the scene. He was arrested a short time after the crash, parked on Rossman Avenue at Reynolds Street. The officer immediately smelled the odor of alcohol coming from Olds, and noticed that he appeared to be in a state of shock and confusion, according to the criminal complaint.
Olds' next court appearance is Monday, May 16 before District Judge Waldemar B. Senyk.
