DETROIT LAKES — Luke Gordon Patton, 28, of Detroit Lakes, has been charged in Becker County District Court with felony third-degree assault and misdemeanor fifth-degree assault.

According to court records, about 2 a.m. on April 2, Detroit Lakes Police Department Officers were dispatched to the Holiday Inn in Detroit Lakes, on the report of a fight. When officers arrived, a group of people was gathered in the parking lot outside the front doors. A man there said he had been headbutted and punched by Patton.

The man said he stepped into a group of people trying to break up an argument when Patton headbutted him and punched him one time, causing his front tooth to break. A portion of the man’s tooth was missing and he had a cut on his upper lip and blood inside of his nostrils.

Three other adult witnesses said they saw Patton headbutt and punch the man. Patton said he was defending himself by pushing the man away.

He was released without bail, under standard conditions of release. His next court hearing is May 16.
