DETROIT LAKES — Lucas Matthew Hartwig, 28, of Park Rapids, has been charged in Becker County District Court with felony third-degree assault.
According to court records, on Feb. 17, a Becker County deputy met with the victim of an assault outside of the emergency room at a hospital in Park Rapids.
The man reported that when he left the bathroom inside Osage Bait & Tackle, Hartwig was waiting for him and punched him in the face. The man suffered a broken jaw and lost one of his teeth as a result of the punch. The man reported Hartwig was upset because he was with Hartwig's ex-girlfriend. In a SnapChat message between Hartwig and another person, he admitted to punching the man twice, and described the bathroom as looking "like a murder scene."
On July 22, District Judge Michelle W. Lawson sentenced Hartwig to 45 days in jail, with credit for three days served, and work release privileges granted. He was fined $1,000 plus $1,150 in court fees, and was ordered not to drink or use illegal drugs. He was barred from possessing any firearms for life, and was placed on supervised probation for five years.
Domestic assault by strangulation charge dismissed
Chad Eric Stewart, 38, of Thief River Falls was charged in Becker County District Court with felony domestic assault by strangulation.

According to court records, on Jan. 12 a White Earth police officer was dispatched to Ponsford on the report of an assault. A woman there said Stewart had assaulted her and poured an unknown substance down her throat.
On July 22, the Becker County Attorney’s Office dismissed the charge because “the state does not believe it can meet its burden of proof at trial based on recently disclosed additional investigative materials,” according to court documents.
