He was charged with two felony counts of first-degree arson in Ramsey County in February after violating an order for protection, holding police at bay and setting an ex-girlfriend's apartment on fire in St. Paul, with himself inside it. He was not injured and police helped the woman escape, but the fire killed her cat.

DL man sentenced for stealing guns

Justin Robert Marlen, 37, of rural Detroit Lakes has been sentenced in Becker County District Court for felony theft and gross misdemeanor possession of guns or ammo.

According to court records, on Dec. 31, 2021, homeowners in Detroit Lakes reported the theft of two Taurus revolvers from their residence. The reporting parties described the two firearms in detail, and said they had allowed Marlen to stay at the residence for a month back in October and November 2021. They suspected Marlen as being the person who took the revolvers. During the investigation, it was learned that a Becker County man had bought a Taurus 357 revolver from Marlen in October. It turned out to be one of the stolen guns.

Marlen was previously convicted of felony theft in 2018.

On June 27 District Judge Michael Fritz stayed imposition of sentence and ordered Marlen to serve 29 days in jail, with credit for 29 days served. He was fined $500 plus $1,290 in court fees. He was placed on supervised probation for five years.

On Aug. 23, a nationwide warrant was issued for Marlen’s arrest, day or night, to be held for court. The stay of imposition of sentence was revoked and annulled.
