Crime and fire report: 35 vehicles left the roadway or crashed in Becker County since Monday

Since Monday, Nov. 14, 35 vehicle crashes or instances of vehicles leaving the roadway were reported to emergency dispatchers in Becker County. No injuries were reported with any of the crashes.

Monday, Nov. 14

1:18 a.m., near County Road 37, Detroit Lakes, fight reported. A 33-year-old Detroit Lakes man allegedly struck a 27-year-old Fergus Falls man in the head, which resulted in a cut. The victim refused medical transport. No arrests.

8:33 a.m., near Highway 34, Osage, an outdoor wood stove was reported as on-fire. The stove was not near any structures. No damage. No injuries. Extinguished after about 45 minutes.

8:55 a.m., near 8th Street, Detroit Lakes, tires and rims were stolen from a vehicle in a parking lot.

10:10 a.m., at Detroit Lakes High School, two-vehicle crash. No injuries.

10:11 a.m., near 120th Avenue, Hitterdal, large brush fire reported. Officers told the property owner that burn permits were still required until the snowpack exceeds three inches in depth.

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. — A Thief River Falls couple and owners of Harlan's Boats R Us have been charged with multiple tax crimes.
Wade Alfred Olds, 53, of Detroit Lakes was charged Nov. 22 in Becker County District Court with two felony criminal vehicular homicide charges involving driving while intoxicated. He is also charged with one felony count of criminal vehicular operation.
According to court records, on Sept. 29, 2021 he was arrested in the Holy Rosary Church parking lot in Detroit Lakes, after a KOPS (Keeping Our Police Safe) Alert was issued by Becker County dispatch a day earlier.

11:18 a.m., near Minnesota Avenue, Detroit Lakes, possible fraud. Under investigation.

1:45 p.m., near Anderson Road, Detroit Lakes, six tote bins containing antiques were reported stolen along with the property’s “No Trespassing” sign.

2:09 p.m., near Washington Avenue, Detroit Lakes, a laptop computer was stolen from a vehicle.

3:20 p.m., near Randolph Road, Detroit Lakes, a train left the railroad tracks. No injuries. BNSF railroad on-scene.

5:10 p.m., near South Shore Drive, Detroit Lakes, a vehicle struck a dog. The dog owner was on-scene.

5:35 p.m., near Lake Avenue, Detroit Lakes, two-vehicle crash. No injuries.

6:22 p.m., near 353rd Circle, Ogema, a caller reported money from their bank account was transferred to a cash app. The incident is under investigation.

10:25 p.m., near Laura Avenue, Detroit Lakes, possible prescription drug theft.


11:16 p.m., near County Road 21, Detroit Lakes, a vehicle left the roadway and entered Little Floyd Lake. The vehicle was not submerged, but stuck in about 2 feet of water. All three vehicle occupants evacuated safely. No injuries reported.

Tuesday, Nov. 15

“The last order was either a Double Papa Burger or a double bacon,” recalled employee Wendy Olson. “I’ve been working here for four or five years. At first, it (the last day) was sad, but then people kept coming in; the line grew and grew. By the end it was bittersweet.”
Two sedans and a deer were involved in an accident along County Highway 21, Detroit Lakes. The drivers of the sedans were 24 years old and 37 years old. Injuries were reported.
According to court records, on Feb. 21, 2021 the suspect assaulted his girlfriend at her home in Detroit Lakes.
Anderson Saint Georges, chief executive officer of Daystar Recovery Center in Detroit Lakes, was appointed to Gov. Tim Walz's advisory council on opioids, substance use and addiction, according to a Nov. 29 news release from the governor's office. Saint Georges will serve a four-year term on the council, which will begin Jan. 3.

1:14 a.m., near Rattle Snake Circle, Waubun, domestic assault reported. A 30-year-old Red Lake man was arrested in connection with the incident.

10:40 a.m., near Tower Road, Detroit Lakes, single-vehicle rollover. The driver refused medical transport.

1:31 p.m., near Ash Avenue and 2nd Street, Frazee, multiple road signs damaged by a vehicle.

3:56 p.m., near Airport Road and Highway 10, Detroit Lakes, two-vehicle crash. No injuries.

4:25 p.m., near North Shore Drive, Detroit Lakes, single-vehicle crash. No injuries.

5:10 p.m., near Main Avenue and County Road 29, Frazee, a stop sign was damaged by a vehicle.

7:23 p.m., near Highway 59 and 270th Street, Detroit Lakes, a vehicle struck a deer.


Wednesday, Nov. 16

5:25 a.m., near Barbara Avenue, Detroit Lakes, a white, 1997 Honda Civic was reported stolen.

5:49 a.m., near Randolph Road and 10th Avenue, Detroit Lakes, a man was seen walking on the railroad tracks. The man was advised he was trespassing on private property and the man left the tracks.

11:27 a.m., at the Becker County Jail, an inmate experienced a medical issue and was transported to Essentia Health St. Mary’s in Detroit Lakes for treatment.

12:57 p.m., at Walmart, a vehicle struck the building causing minor damage. No injuries reported.

1:52 p.m., near Highway 34 and 355th Avenue, Detroit Lakes, a pickup truck, towing a camper, left the roadway and struck a tree. No injuries reported.

2:42 p.m., near County Road 21, Ogema, a caller reported unauthorized use of their bank account. The incident is under investigation.

3:44 p.m., near 2nd Street, Lake Park, phone scam reported.

4:37 p.m., near south Washington Avenue, Detroit Lakes, a handicap parking sign was found laying on the sidewalk.
