Crime and fire report: 43 crashes reported in Becker County since Feb. 17; inmate overdoses at county jail

Since Thursday, Feb. 17, 43 crashes, involving 61 vehicles, were reported to Becker County emergency dispatch. In total, six people were transported to nearby medical clinics and treated for injuries sustained in the crashes. Also, on Sunday, Fed. 20 at 12: 17 p.m., at the Becker County Jail, a 35-year-old male inmate, of Duluth, suffered an apparent drug overdose. One dose of Narcan was administered to the inmate, who responded positively. The inmate was transported to a nearby medical clinic for treatment and returned. He said he had ingested an unknown amount of methamphetamines, cocaine and fentanyl.

The following reports were compiled from the Becker County Sheriff’s Office and Detroit Lakes Police Department from an official with knowledge of the cases, unless otherwise noted.

Thursday, Feb. 17

  • 8:51 a.m., 31000 block Valley View Road, Frazee, train derailment involving about 15 cars. No injuries.
  • 10:44 a.m., 500 block Central Avenue, Detroit Lakes, on a bus, two students were involved in a disagreement and one student threw a water bottle at the other. The students were spoken to.
  • 11:15 a.m., at Walmart, Detroit Lakes, shoplifting.
  • 11:17 a.m., 52000 block 140th Street, Menahga, house fire. No visible flames, but smoke coming out of the eaves. The house is believed to be unoccupied. Firefighters left the scene at about 2 p.m.
  • 11:34 a.m., 200 block Barbara Avenue, Detroit Lakes, past action report of inappropriate sexual conduct. The case is under investigation.
  • 2:26 p.m., County Road 11, Audubon, domestic assault. A 20-year-old Audubon man reportedly assaulted his parents, a 62-year-old man and 54-year-old woman. The father was bleeding, but refused medical treatment. The 20-year-old was arrested.
  • 2:53 p.m., 27000 block Witter Avenue, Park Rapids, fraud.
  • 3:16 p.m., 26000 block County Road 37, Detroit Lakes, a truck and trailer with North Dakota plates was reported in a roadside ditch. No injuries. A tow was required.
  • 3:22 p.m., 54000 block Highway 34, Osage, an assault involving two-parties was reported at Osage Bait and Tackle. A 21-year-old man opened the restroom door and was hit in the face by a 28-year-old man. The 21-year-old was transported to a nearby medical clinic in a personal vehicle and suffered a broken jaw. The 28-year-old was arrested.
  • 11:13 p.m., near County Road 25 and Highway 34, Detroit Lakes, multiple parties were involved in a fight outside of a vehicle on the side of the road. A separate vehicle was nearby and in a roadside ditch. A 15-year-old boy was transported to a nearby medical clinic with undisclosed injuries and cited for minor consumption. A 16-year-old Detroit Lakes girl and 17-year-old Detroit Lakes boy were detained in connection with the incident.

Friday, Feb. 18

  • 2:02 a.m., 1100 block West Avenue, Detroit Lakes, request to remove multiple individuals from a residence. One person was arrested on an unrelated warrant and the others left the property.
  • 3:57 a.m., 30000 block County Road 37, Ponsford, vehicle in the ditch. No injuries.
  • 9:04 a.m., 25000 Brolin Beach Road, Detroit Lakes, mail fraud. Multiple incidents reported. The case is under investigation.
  • 10:25 a.m., near mile marker 30 on Highway 10, Lake Park, vehicle stuck. No injuries. Vehicle is drivable.
  • 10:45 p.m., near mile marker 274 on Highway 59, two- or three-car-crash reported. EMS was dispatched to the scene.
  • 11:16 a.m., near County Road 18 and County Road 107, Ogema, vehicle off the road. Appears unoccupied.
  • 11:26 a.m., near South Shore Drive and 270th Avenue, Detroit Lakes, two-vehicle crash. No injuries.
  • 11:32 a.m., near County Road 5 and 190th Street, Lake Park, vehicle in ditch. No injuries. Tow required.
  • 11:33 a.m., near Highway 59 and County Road 26, Callaway, two-vehicle crash. No injuries.
  • 11:35 a.m., near mile marker 68 on Highway 34, two vehicles reported in a roadside ditch. No injuries.
  • 11:42 a.m., near Highway 59 and County Road 26, Callaway, four- or five-car crash reported. MnDOT shut down the roadway. Three vehicle occupants suffered injuries and were transported to a nearby medical clinic for treatment.
  • 12:29 p.m., 1300 block Madison Avenue, Detroit Lakes, two-vehicle crash. No injuries.
  • 12:52 p.m., near South Shore Drive, Detroit Lakes, two vehicles were reported stuck on the roadway.
  • 1:08 p.m., near County Road 39 and Foss Road, Osage, vehicle in ditch. No injuries. Tow required.
  • 1:43 p.m., 24000 block Brill Avenue, Park Rapids, shop fire. All occupants evacuated safely. Extinguished after nearly three hours.
  • 1:48 p.m., near 290th Street and County Road 7, Lake Park, vehicle in ditch. No injuries.
  • 2:07 p.m., 1100 block South Shore Drive, Detroit Lakes, two-vehicle crash. No injuires.
  • 3:13 p.m., near County Road 129 and 470th Avenue, Ponsford, vehicle stuck on the roadway in a 4-foot snow drift. Assistance for the stuck vehicle was en route.
  • 3:58 p.m., near mile marker 276 on Highway 59, vehicle in ditch.
  • 5:09 p.m., near 210th Street and 185th Avenue, Audubon, vehicle in ditch. Unoccupied.
  • 5:41 p.m., near County Road 37 and County Road 35, Ponsford, vehicle in ditch. No injuries.
  • 6:13 p.m., 25000 block County Road 39, Osage, vehicle reported stuck in a snowdrift.
  • 6:26 p.m., near County Road 26 and west Straight Lake Avenue, Osage, a snowplow was reported stuck in the roadway.
  • 6:52 p.m., near Washington Drive, Osage, a truck and trailer were reported stuck in the roadway.
  • 8:02 p.m., near County Road 26 and 240th Avenue, Callaway, vehicle reported stuck in the roadway.
  • 8:36 p.m., 27000 block County Road 156, Osage, a vehicle was reported stuck in the roadway.
  • 10:02 p.m., near Main Street, Ogema, a train was reported blocking an intersection in town. The train was having engine trouble and assistance had been dispatched.
  • 10:49 p.m., at the Northside Bar and Grill, Detroit Lakes, assault involving a 54-year-old man and a 66-year-old man. The 66-year-old was transported to a nearby medical clinic. The case was sent to the city prosecutor for possible charges.

Saturday, Feb. 19

  • 12:15 a.m., 29000 block County Road 129, Ponsford, a vehicle was reported in a snowdrift.
  • 12:45 a.m., 23000 block County Road 113, Detroit Lakes, a vehicle struck a deer.
  • 1:12 a.m., near Witter Avenue, Park Rapids, a vehicle was reported in a snowdrift. No injuries.
  • 2:22 a.m., near County Road 22 and East Pearl Lake Road, Detroit Lakes, vehicle in ditch. Unoccupied.
  • 9:42 a.m., 1100 block South Shore Drive, Detroit Lakes, two-vehicle crash. No injuries.
  • 9:53 a.m., 1200 block East Shore Drive, Detroit Lakes, parked vehicle damage.
  • 10:28 a.m., 130 block Veteran’s Memorial Parkway, Detroit Lakes, vehicle damaged. While in the drive-thru line at Caribou Coffee, the gate to the dumpster swung open and damaged a vehicle.
  • 11:33 a.m., 3000 block 3rd Street, Lake Park, physical domestic. The caller said a man was hitting his girlfriend in the face. Officers couldn’t find any marks on the woman and no medical attention was needed. The parties were separated for the evening.
  • 12:45 p.m., 48000 County Road 26, Ponsford, email threats reported.
  • 1:14 p.m., at Walmart, Detroit Lakes, parked vehicle damage.
  • 2:08 p.m., Country Avenue, Lake Park, threats with a handgun. A 32-year-old Lake Park man was arrested.
  • 3:33 p.m., near Highway 34, Osage, vehicle off the roadway. No injuries.
  • 4:20 p.m., 14000 block Leisure Drive, Detroit Lakes, vehicle in ditch. No injuries. Tow required.
  • 4:51 p.m., 200 block Oak Grove Avenue, Detroit Lakes, parked vehicle damage.
  • 5:36 p.m., 24000 block Spry Road, Callaway, a vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. Airbags deployed in the crash. The driver refused medical treatment.
  • 9:37 p.m., near County Road 1 and 135th Street, Lake Park, vehicle off the roadway. Unoccupied.

Sunday, Feb. 20

  • 12:13 a.m., near Highway 59, Detroit Lakes, two-vehicle crash. No injuries.
  • 2:17 a.m., near 130th Avenue and County Road 7, Ulen, two-vehicle crash. Three of the vehicle occupants were injured, one critically, and a medical airlift was requested, but unable to respond due to bad weather. The three occupants were transported to a nearby medical clinic for treatment.
  • 3:03 a.m., near mile marker 53 on Highway 34, vehicle in ditch. No injuries.
  • 6:40 a.m., near County Road 39 and County Road 38, Snellman, vehicle in ditch. Tow required.
  • 8:25 a.m., 14000 block County Road 4, Lake Park, two-vehicle crash. No injuries. Tow required.
  • 9:30 a.m., near County Road 1 and County Road 4, Lake Park, vehicle in ditch. Unoccupied.
  • 12:13 p.m., at Walmart, Detroit Lakes, two-vehicle crash. No injuries.
  • 12:17 p.m., at the Becker County Jail, Detroit Lakes, possible overdose. An unresponsive 35-year-old male inmate, of Duluth, received a dose of Narcan and responded positively. The inmate was transported to a nearby medical clinic for treatment and returned to the jail. The inmate claims to have ingested an unknown amount of methamphetamine, cocaine, and fentanyl.
  • 7:02 p.m., 32000 block 370th Street, Ogema, breaking-and-entering. The caller claims an alleged suspect broke into their residence, stole clothing and vandalized the residence.
  • 7:40 p.m., 100 block east Maple Avenue, Frazee, fire. A caller reported their neighbor was burning a dresser within the city limits. The individual was advised to extinguish the fire.

Monday, Feb. 21

  • 11:57 a.m., at BTD, Detroit Lakes, fire to a dust collection unit. No injuries reported.
  • 1:20 p.m., 58000 block Highway 87, Menahga, domestic incident. No injuries reported and no medical attention was needed. A 43-year-old man was arrested at the scene.
  • 1:37 p.m., near Washington Avenue and Holmes Street, Detroit Lakes, two-vehicle crash. No injuries.
  • 4:03 p.m.,near Roosevelt Avenue and Frazee Street, two-vehicle crash. No injuries.
  • 7:44 p.m., near County Road 37 and Big Rush Lake, Ponsford, vehicle in ditch. No injuries.
  • 9:46 p.m., 40000 block County Road 34, Ogema, suicide related. An 18-year-old man was threatening self-harm and was transported to a nearby medical clinic for evaluation.
  • 10:32 p.m., near County Road 143 and Waboose Lake Road, Ponsford, a vehicle was reported on the side of the road and out of gas. The vehicle occupants started a fire on the side of the road to keep warm and were assisted after about an hour.
