Crime and fire report: Multiple injuries reported after semi-truck collides with Amish buggy in Frazee

The names, conditions and medical transport status of the injured individuals were not included in the Becker County emergency service report. The incident is under investigation by the Minnesota State Patrol. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

Thursday, Oct. 20

12:45 a.m., Blackhawk Road and County Road 6, Audubon, traffic stop due to poor driving conduct. A 55-year-old Lake Park man was arrested for possible DWI.

1:17 a.m., near Morrow Avenue, Detroit Lakes, possible drug overdose. Two doses of Narcan were administered at the scene. A 30-year-old Minneapolis man was transported to Essentia Health St. Mary’s in Detroit Lakes for treatment.

3:09 a.m., near Highway 10 and 190th Avenue, Audubon, traffic stop. A 16-year-old Lake Park male was arrested for possible DWI and drug possession.

6:38 a.m., near Cheryl Avenue, Detroit Lakes, a caller reported male genitalia was spray painted on the roadway. Detroit Lakes Public Works was notified.

11:50 a.m., at the Becker County Jail, suspected drugs were discovered upon inmate intake.

12:15 p.m., at Walmart, Detroit Lakes, shoplifting.

12:30 p.m., near Woodland Lane, Detroit Lakes, two-vehicle crash. No injuries.

According to court records: On or about Aug. 1 through Aug. 24, 2022, he physically and sexually abused a woman in Becker County, threatening to kill her family and friends if she reported him.
A 24-year-old Hayward, Wisconsin, woman was arrested for third-degree possession of a controlled substance, according to call-for-service logs. A Moorhead man was arrested on an unrelated warrant.
He said that he was going to walk around with a bullet resistant vest and expressed no concerns of getting in a shootout with police, because he wanted to do a “suicide by cop.”

1:52 p.m., at the Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center, two teenage boys were asked to leave and trespassed from the facility.

2:55 p.m., near 170th Street, Detroit Lakes, personal checks were reported stolen. Checks were written at various locations in Fargo and Grand Forks. The case is under investigation.

3:33 p.m., near Frazee, a caller reported continuous unwanted contact from an individual. The caller was advised on harassment restraining order procedures.

4:48 p.m., near County Road 42 and County Road 47, Osage, a fire was reported. The fire appears to have been started by a 4-wheeler. Extinguished after about 3 hours.

7:46 p.m., at Menards, Detroit Lakes, shoplifting.

8:49 p.m., near County Road 15, Detroit Lakes, a caller reported he believed he contacted eBay for account help, but believes it may have been a scammer. Their phone was reportedly taken over by a hacker. The caller contacted their bank and credit card company to issue a hold.

9:39 p.m., near Lake Park, multiple regional law enforcement agencies assisted with an Itasca County attempt-to-locate. A 48-year-old man, of Lead, S.D., was arrested under an Itasca County warrant for terroristic threats and domestic assault.

9:48 p.m., near County Road 29, Detroit Lakes, a vehicle struck a deer.

10:33 p.m., near Detroit Lakes, a caller reported photoshopped inappropriate photos of a juvenile Detroit Lakes girl were posted on social media. The case is under investigation.

Friday, Oct. 21

9:55 a.m., near Two Inlets State Forest, Park Rapids, park security reported a box containing registration forms at the Hungry Man Campground appeared to be tampered with. Unknown if any items or information was stolen.

12:38 p.m., at Walmart, Detroit Lakes, shoplifting.

1:19 p.m., near County Road 56, Frazee, a caller reported an ATV and an old Chevrolet Suburban were “tearing up” the road. They added this has been an ongoing issue all summer.

4:16 p.m., near County Road 14, Callaway, a fire was reported near a hunting shack. Extinguished.

4:20 p.m., near County Road 31, Frazee, kitchen fire reported. An elderly woman was able to evacuate safely. The fire was extinguished in about 80 minutes. The incident is under investigation.

4:24 p.m., near Elizabeth Street and Langford Street, Detroit Lakes, leaf burning reported. The fire was extinguished.

6:44 p.m., near 363rd Avenue and Highway 87, Frazee, an Amish buggy was struck by a semi-truck. Multiple injuries were reported, but the names, conditions and medical transport status of the individuals were not included in the emergency service log. The incident is under investigation by the Minnesota State Patrol. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

7:13 p.m., near County Road 36 and 170th Street, Frazee, a vehicle struck a buck.

7:17 p.m., near County Road 126, Rochert, a 69-year-old Detroit Lakes man reportedly stabbed himself in the wrist with a filet knife. Pressure was applied to the wound. The bleeding stopped. EMS was dispatched to the scene.

8:31 p.m., near 210th Street, Mahnomen, multiple tools reported stolen. The tools were valued at about $1,200.

10:30 p.m., near Ponsford, an 18-year-old Ponsford woman was threatening self-harm. She was transported to North Memorial Health Clinic in Park Rapids for an evaluation.

10:41 p.m., near Mission Road, Ogema, disturbance. A 36-year-old White Earth man and a 37-year-old White Earth man were arrested. Both will be released when sober.

11:13 p.m., near 295th Avenue, Waubun, a woman reportedly assaulted a man. No medical attention needed and no arrests made.

Saturday, Oct. 22

1:51 a.m., at Holiday Inn Lakefront, Detroit Lakes, an intoxicated woman was banned from a party bus for disorderly conduct. A family member picked up the woman without further incident.

9:09 a.m., at L and M Fleet Supply, Detroit Lakes, shoplifting.

11:51 a.m., near Gary Avenue, Detroit Lakes, leaf burning reported.

4:39 p.m., at Walmart, Detroit Lakes, shoplifting.

6:50 p.m., at Becker County Jail, possible witness tampering. A male inmate reportedly attempted to influence a witness using a monitored text message application while in custody.

10:45 p.m., near Mission Road, Ogema, possible alcohol poisoning. EMS was dispatched to the scene and treated a 17-year-old girl.

11:04 p.m., near Garfield Lane, Lake Park, vehicle tires were slashed. The case is under investigation.

Sunday, Oct. 23

1:11 a.m., near Summit Avenue, Detroit Lakes, mental health. A 30-year-old Detroit Lakes man was transported for evaluation.

Officers forced entry to the man’s residence and found him face down and deceased. Officers believed the cause of death was a drug overdose, according to an emergency dispatch report.

The unplowed, narrow driveway on Stall Lane, near Lake Melissa off Highway 59, caused problems as first responders arrived on scene, the Detroit Lakes fire chief said.
A roof fire was reported in Frazee on Friday, March 10. Fire crews extinguished the blaze after about five hours, and all occupants evacuated safely, according to a dispatch report.

9:54 a.m., near Smokey Hills State Forest, grass and brush fire reported.

10:57 a.m., near Frazee, a 51-year-old Detroit Lakes man was reportedly sending inappropriate messages to a 13-year-old girl. The messages do not rise to the level of criminal sexual conduct charges, but were inappropriate, according to the emergency dispatch report.

1:05 p.m., near Mission Road, Ogema, a 56-year-old Ogema man was found unresponsive. CPR was administered at the scene and the man was airlifted via LifeLink helicopter to Fargo for additional treatment.

1:39 p.m., near 380th Street, Ulen, a combine was reported as on-fire and near a corn field. No injuries.

2:51 p.m., near Richwood Road, Detroit Lakes, a caller reported receiving threatening messages. They were advised on order-for-protection procedures. The case was sent to the Becker County prosecutor’s office for possible charges.

6:53 p.m., near west Ash Avenue, Frazee, possible scam. Two juvenile girls were soliciting money for a class trip. No money was given.

8:11 p.m., near County Road 21, Detroit Lakes, a dog was struck by a car. The dog’s owner was contacted.

8:40 p.m., near Native Loop, Ponsford, a 22-year-old Ponsford woman broke into a residence and was causing damage inside the residence, including puncturing an air mattress. The woman left the scene on foot before first responders arrived.
