Crime report: Same Wadena man arrested twice at Zorbaz in Detroit Lakes in separate weekend incidents

On Saturday, a 43-year-old Wadena man was arrested at Zorbaz in Detroit Lakes for disorderly conduct. The same man returned to Zorbaz in Detroit Lakes the following night and was arrested for trespassing.

Thursday, Sept. 15

1:54 a.m., near Detroit Lakes, a caller reported they were receiving harassing phone messages.

7:16 a.m., at Height of Land Lake, stranded boater. A 58-year-old Le Sueur man became stranded on the lake when his 17-foot Bass Tracker boat became stuck in a wild rice patch. He was rescued and towed to shore by a Becker County Sheriff’s Office airboat. No injuries.

7:29 a.m., near Detroit Lakes, phone threats were reported.

11:05 a.m., near Callaway, a vehicle was broken into and personal information was stolen. Then, the thief reportedly tried to open up a bank account in the caller’s name and attempted to deposit a check. The case is under investigation.

11:10 a.m., near County Road 29, Detroit Lakes, fraud reported. Under investigation.

The couple and their two dogs were found dead at a residence in Lakeview Township, near Detroit Lakes, on Sept. 27.

The bodies of a man and woman, along with two deceased dogs, were found on the 25000 block of County Road 6 in a Lakeview Township residence on Sept. 27, according to a news release from the Becker County Sheriff's Office.
“Waterville friends of the murderer said he could drop five quail with as many shots, and the unarmed wardens had no chance at all," said a contemporaneous newspaper account of the encounter.

1:51 p.m., near County Road 147, Detroit Lakes, a squad was damaged.

2:45 p.m., near Frazee Street, Detroit Lakes, possible fraud. A CVS Pharmacy employee reported they believed a prescription had been forged. The medication was not filled and the party never returned to attempt to claim the prescription.

6:19 p.m., near County Road 34, Ogema, diesel gasoline reported stolen. The incident is under investigation.

6:57 p.m., near Andrews Avenue, Detroit Lakes, two men were riding bicycles up and down a neighborhood road. One of the riders, a 45-year-old Detroit Lakes man, was reportedly yelling and swearing at a nearby child. The man said he’d voluntarily submit to a mental health evaluation at a nearby clinic.

8:30 p.m., near Migizi Avenue, Ponsford, a stolen vehicle was found and recovered. The vehicle was occupied at the time. A 30-year-old Ponsford woman was arrested.

Friday, Sept. 16

8:37 a.m., near Marten Drive, Ogema, past action, a transit bus was damaged.

11:17 a.m., near County Road 110, Callaway, a blue, 1985 Ford pickup was reported missing. The pickup is a farm vehicle and does not have a keyed-start ignition.

12:24 p.m., at Walmart, Detroit Lakes, trespassing. A citation was issued.


1:12 p.m., a Lake Park-Audubon High School, a student was reported as unruly and threatening students and staff. The student’s parents were notified.

4:56 p.m., near Highway 59, Detroit Lakes, two-vehicle crash. No injuries.

5:18 p.m., near State Street, Detroit Lakes, a report of missing prescription drugs.

5:46 p.m., near Lake Park, phone scam. $400 was sent to the scammer. The caller’s bank has been notified.

Saturday, Sept. 17

12:00 a.m., at the Holiday Inn Lakefront, Detroit Lakes, two unruly individuals were escorted out of the bar. The parties left “reluctantly.”

2:14 a.m., at Zorbaz, Detroit Lakes, disorderly. A 43-year-old Wadena man was arrested.

8:05 a.m., near Washington Drive, Osage, a phone, range finder and loose change were stolen from a parked vehicle.

10:28 a.m., near Jackson Avenue, Detroit Lakes, padlocks were reportedly cut to a trailer. Nothing appeared to be missing.

School board approves two out-of-state travel requests
Prior to opening the new jail, $600,000 a year was budgeted for boarding inmates out of the county. But in 2021, with the new jail open, that expense went away and Becker County actually made $530,000 from the boarding of federal prisoners, along with boarding for other counties — which adds up to a $1.1 million budget turnaround.
Peterson was named Police Officer of the Year for his actions as a Mahnomen County deputy on Feb. 19, 2008, when he “apprehended two suspects who had just shot his partner, Deputy Chris Dewey,” according to a news release from the time from the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association.

12:54 p.m., near 292nd Street, Callaway, death. A passerby saw a lawnmower along the road. Upon closer inspection, they noticed a woman was underneath the lawnmower. A 55-year-old Callaway woman was pronounced dead at the scene. She was last seen at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The case is under investigation.

1:07 p.m., near Ogema, medical. A 25-year-old White Earth man had cuts on his neck that appeared to be self-inflicted. The man was possibly under the effect of drugs. The man was transported to Essentia Health St. Mary’s in Detroit Lakes for treatment.

2:15 p.m., at BP gas station, Detroit Lakes, a bicycle was stolen.

4:15 p.m., near State Street, Detroit Lakes, officers assisted in serving a trespass notice.

7:05 p.m., near Frazee, a caller reported hearing a woman assault multiple parties. No injuries reported. No arrests made. The case was forwarded to the city prosecutor for possible charges.

7:49 p.m., at Walmart, Detroit Lakes, two-vehicle crash. No injuries.

8:04 p.m., near west Maple Avenue, Frazee, an attempt-to-locate was put on a silver, 2007 GMC Yukon.

Sunday, Sept. 18

1:43 a.m., at Zorbaz, Detroit Lakes, a 43-year-old Wadena man, who was arrested the night before for disorderly conduct, returned to the property and was arrested for trespassing.

1:10 p.m., at Walmart, Detroit Lakes, shoplifting.

4:49 p.m., near County Road 6, Detroit Lakes, 11 warnings were issued to different drivers for speeding, not wearing seatbelts and crossing the centerline. No citations were issued. The stops occurred over a 44-minute period.

6:49 p.m., at Detroit Mountain, Detroit Lakes, keys, a wallet and a hat were stolen from a personal storage locker.

10:35 p.m., near County Road 6, Detroit Lakes, an attempt-to-locate was placed on a missing white, 2006 Chevrolet Equinox.
