DETROIT LAKES — Two teenagers were rescued on Sunday, May 15 after falling into the Pelican River at Dunton Locks Park near Detroit Lakes, between Muskrat Lake and Lake Sallie, and getting swept out into the lake by the current, approximately 100 yards from shore.
According to a news release from the Becker County Sheriff's Office, the incident happened at about 2:38 p.m. Friends and family nearby with kayaks were able to reach the teens and throw life jackets to them; they were then brought back to shore in the kayaks.
The teens were treated by Essentia Health-St. Mary's EMS on shore and released to their parents, according to the sheriff's office.
The sheriff's office reminds people to use caution near rivers or any areas of flowing water, due to high water levels from recent snow melt and rain as well as cold water temperatures. Also, use personal flotation devices when canoeing, kayaking or partaking in other recreational activities on or near lakes and rivers.
