DETROIT LAKES — Homecoming is a tradition that began in the early 1900s, according to Wikipedia. Who hosted the first official homecoming game is debatable, according to one’s source. However, the big game quickly grew to include other fun activities, which local athletic teams have embraced, including The Detroit Lakes School District.
The Lakers celebrated their Homecoming week Oct. 3-7 with several events. The fun began with crowning this year's homecoming royalty, Amaya LeCleir and Ethan Carrier. As the festivities rippled into the week, students were encouraged to dress up each day, according to a predetermined theme. In the evenings, the varsity sports teams played on their home field and courts with fans in the stands. The fun rolled in like a big wave on Friday, bringing a tide of red on Washington Avenue for the annual parade before the football game and dance to conclude the fun week.
The annual powderpuff game drew a big crowd as the Detroit Lakes High School senior ladies invited the juniors to a gridiron game.
