DETROIT LAKES — Jeffrey Scott Gunderson, 28, the Detroit Lakes man who was jailed in November for making violent threats against a local elementary school, has now been charged in Becker County District Court with felony first-degree damage to property after breaking the security glass on his cell door window.

According to court records, on Nov. 20, 2021, Becker County Jail staff observed that Gunderson, an inmate, had broken the glass.

Prior to the incident, jail staff had told Gunderson he could stay in his current cell, per his request, if he cleaned it. Gunderson agreed and was given a broom, mop and bucket. A short time later, staff discovered that he had thrown the mop bucket, overturned the garbage, and bent the broom in half. Gunderson pointed out that he broke the window by throwing the mop bucket at it. He was then transferred to another cell.

On April 12, the jail received a repair quote of $4,800, excluding installation, to replace the broken security glass.

On May 3, cash bail for the damage to property charge was set at $1,000 or bond at $10,000, with conditions of release, or $20,000 without conditions.

Gunderson has been in jail since Nov. 9, 2021 on the felony charge of making violent threats against a Detroit Lakes elementary school. He remains in jail on that charge in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond, with conditions of release that include no trespassing at any Detroit Lakes schools.
