Murder-suicide was cause of Detroit Lakes couple's death

The couple and their two dogs were found dead at a residence in Lakeview Township, near Detroit Lakes, on Sept. 27.

DETROIT LAKES — The Sept. 27 deaths of a Detroit Lakes couple has been ruled a murder-suicide, according to a news release from Becker County Sheriff Todd Glander.

The two were identified as Steven Alton Stearns, 45, and Stacy Lynn Stearns, 49, husband and wife, of Detroit Lakes, Glander said. According to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office, the cause of death of Stacy Stearns has been ruled as a homicide, and the cause of death of Steven Stearns ruled a suicide. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of the deceased,” Glander said.

The couple and their two dogs were found dead at a residence in Lakeview Township, near Detroit Lakes, on Sept. 27.

At 9:09 a.m., emergency dispatchers received a phone call requesting the need for law enforcement on the 25000 block of County Road 6, according to a Becker County Sheriff's Office news release.

Upon entering the residence, sheriff's deputies and members of the Detroit Lakes Police Department discovered the bodies of a man and a woman along with two deceased dogs. The bodies were sent to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office for autopsies and identification.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension was contacted and also responded to the scene.

Wade Alfred Olds, 53, of Detroit Lakes was charged Nov. 22 in Becker County District Court with two felony criminal vehicular homicide charges involving driving while intoxicated. He is also charged with one felony count of criminal vehicular operation.
According to court records, on Sept. 29, 2021 he was arrested in the Holy Rosary Church parking lot in Detroit Lakes, after a KOPS (Keeping Our Police Safe) Alert was issued by Becker County dispatch a day earlier.
Two sedans and a deer were involved in an accident along County Highway 21, Detroit Lakes. The drivers of the sedans were 24 years old and 37 years old. Injuries were reported.
