DETROIT LAKES — Nominations are open for the 2022 Becker County Outstanding Citizen award to be presented during the Becker County Fair, which runs from July 27 to 30.

According to a MAHUBE-OTWA news release, the award honors a man and woman whose volunteerism and dedicated time and talents have made a positive impact on the community over the past year.

This year, however, according to the release, there will not be a statewide competition at the Minnesota State Fair, but each county has been encouraged to continue the senior awards tradition. The county winners will receive a Minnesota State Fair Outstanding Senior Citizen pin as well as two free tickets to the Minnesota State Fair.

"We’ve learned a lot over the last few years that things may change, but that doesn’t mean they have to end,” stated Lisa Stroschein, senior coordinator for Becker County with MAHUBE-OTWA, in the news release.

Many of our local organizations, groups and clubs would not be able to provide the level of service without the countless hours of volunteerism, the news release stated.

"If you know of an outstanding senior in the community that should be recognized, please consider nominating them," the news release stated. "Criteria for the nominations include that volunteer time must have taken place after someone turns 65 and the individual needs to be 70 years old by June 1."

Official nomination forms are available by contacting Lisa Stroschein at 218-841-1385 or by email at: lstroschein@mahube.org .

The nominees and winners will be announced on Senior Day, July 28 at the Becker County Fair, under the big top tent. Additionally, all nominees, past winners, families, and spectators are invited to join for a fun filled afternoon honoring the amazing volunteering spirit of our Senior Citizens, the news release stated.
