DETROIT LAKES — Detroit Lakes firefighters were called to two local structure fires last week.
Most recently, on the morning of Friday, May 20, they responded to a house fire on the 300 block of Oak Street. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
According to Detroit Lakes Fire Chief Ryan Swanson, the fire started behind the TV in the living room of the home, and — fueled by plastics from a gaming system and other accessories — climbed up a wall and across the ceiling before firefighters arrived and put it out.
“Fire crews were able to extinguish it and keep it inside that (living) room,” he said. “The house needs to be cleaned before folks can move back in, but there was very minimal damage.”
A family lives there, and a woman was home at the time of the fire and reported it right away, “which sped up the whole process,” Swanson said.

The fire was reported a little after 10:30 a.m. and the cause is still being determined, he added.
In an earlier incident on Sunday, May 15, firefighters put out a structure fire that had started in a fifth-wheel camper and spread to a garage at a residence on 170th street in the Detroit Mountain area, Swanson said.
Nobody had been staying in the camper and no one was hurt in the fire, he said. It was a late-night fire and the camper was fully engaged when crews arrived.
“We kept the fire from getting to the home, but the garage was a total loss,” said Swanson.
