A Waubun man made his first appearance Monday in Becker County District Court on felony charges of domestic assault by strangulation and domestic assault-causing fear.
Henry Ray Soyring, 25, of 39718 400th Ave., Waubun, is accused of threatening the life of his girlfriend and trying to choke her during a Nov. 13 argument that took place in Elbow Lake Village.
According to the complaint, Soyring's girlfriend said that he had become verbally abusive, and that the fight had escalated until he shoved her into the shower, punched the shower wall and screamed in her face. The woman said she would call the police, and he allegedly said, "With a slit throat you are gonna call the cops."
Later, she was able to get out of the shower and get dressed, then attempted to leave with her two children. Soyring allegedly attacked her a second time, throwing her to the ground, spitting in her face and not letting her up. She was finally able to get away and went upstairs, but when she tried to leave again, the report says, Soyring pushed her back up the stairs, placed a hand on her throat and pushed down on her neck with his thumb, rendering her temporarily unable to breathe.
The woman was finally able to escape the house and fled to a neighbor's residence, where she contacted law enforcement. Soyring has been convicted on assault-related charges three times since 2005, the last being a Jan. 26 conviction for felony domestic assault in Becker County.
