A 20-year-old man died after jumping from atop the Aerial Lift Bridge early Wednesday, Duluth police reported.
Police were dispatched to the bridge at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and found the man at the top portion of the bridge structure. The man was suicidal and negotiators spent about four hours trying to talk him down, police said.
The man ultimately jumped from the bridge and was pulled from the water by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Duluth Fire Department. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The bridge was closed to traffic for the duration of the incident.
