Man reported leaving Crookston treatment center, drowning in Red Lake River

Law enforcement says witnesses reported a man jumped into the Red Lake River east of Crookston and apparently drowned Monday morning. His body wasn't found Monday.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, witnesses saw the man jump in and surface, then disappear in the river about a mile east of Crookston along U.S. Highway 2 shortly before 9 a.m. Monday.

A search involving Polk and Grand Forks County emergency workers, Crookston police and firefighters continued until 5 p.m. and have resumed Tuesday morning, a sheriff's dispatcher said.

He's presumed to have drowned, the sheriff's office said. His name was not released Monday.

The Crookston Times newspaper reports on its website that Polk County Sheriff Karl Erickson told searchers that three employees of Glenmore Recovery Center, on the campus of the former St. Joseph's convent and school east of Crookston, saw a man leave the center and enter the nearby Red Lake River. He was spotted several times surfacing, then not seen again.

The Times reported that the man's jacket was recovered from the river.

The Grand Forks County Water and Rescue and dive teams responded to the incident.

Glenmore, which is part of Riverview Health in Crookston, offers in-patient and out-patient treatment for addiction and short-term detoxification care, voluntary and involuntary, for people as young as 12, according to its website.
