GRAND FORKS – Emergency personnel responded to a Grand Forks residence Wednesday night after a man called 911 telling dispatchers he was armed and planned to kill himself.
Police cars, ambulance, fire trucks and SWAT vehicles gathered as officers negotiated with the man to surrender.
The man gave up and was taken to Altru Hospital to receive medical attention, said Grand Forks police Lt. Mike Ferguson.
The call came in about 7:10 p.m., and at first, the man told 911 dispatchers he was armed and going to kill himself, but then said he was going to kill himself if he saw a cop, Ferguson said.
It took about an hour of negotiation, but the man was eventually cooperative and was taken for medical attention without incident, Ferguson said.

No charges were filed Wednesday night.
Officers evacuated as many nearby residents as they could contact, Ferguson said, despite the man only threatening to take his own life and not others.
Ferguson wouldn’t elaborate on how many firearms or what types of weapons the man had.
A family member arrived at the scene while officers negotiated with the man, Ferguson said. Ferguson didn’t know if the man lived alone.
