Police diffused a situation with a man wielding an AK-47 at a residence in Wadena on Feb. 23.

The trouble started when Shawn Patrick McKay, 35, of Wadena, came home intoxicated around 2 a.m. and his girlfriend told him she wanted to break up with him, court documents said. McKay allegedly pushed the woman into a wall and slapped her arms down as she tried to protect herself, according to court records. McKay threatened to break her arms, after which she called 911.

When Wadena police arrived, McKay was pacing around the house with the assault rifle, and officers heard him yell, "if they come in here they're [expletive] dead."

McKay eventually gave himself up by coming to the doorway unarmed and saying, "come on in, I'm ready to go to jail," court documents said. The gun was secured, and McKay allegedly showed officers a marijuana pipe and a small amount of marijuana in his possession.

He was charged Feb. 25 with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, terroristic threats, domestic assault, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a small amount of marijuana.
