A man's car sank Friday after he drove past barricades prohibiting traffic on a flooded road.

Clay County Sheriff Bill Bergquist said deputies cited Matthew Benson, 19, of Arvilla, N.D., for going around the barricades.

Benson told authorities he was traveling to Grand Forks, N.D., when he drove north on County Road 1 and into the floodwaters near County Road 26.

Benson swam to safety, but authorities couldn't find his 2000 Hyundai Tiburon, Bergquist said.

"We can't see it anywhere, so it's that deep," Bergquist said.

Clay County deputies ticketed at least four drivers, including Benson, for going around barricades Friday.

Bergquist said some people were taking down the barricades so they could drive on flooded roads. At least one person threw the barricades into a ditch, he said.
