Organic milk production will be discussed at an informational meeting in Detroit Lakes on Thursday, Feb. 16.

Among the invited speakers are Mike Banstra of Horizon Organic Foods and Ogema organic farmer Curtis Ballard, who is an organic certified inspector.

The meeting is co-sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Area Farm Business Management program. It will be at the Speak Easy Restaurant, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Farm Business Management instructor Mark Berg said there is growing interest in organic milk production due to farm prices at $22 a hundredweight.

Berg said Ballard will explain what is required for operators to be certified to produce organic milk.

"Horizon Organic Foods ships milk to 30 processing plants that manufacture their organic dairy products, which you may have seen on your grocer's shelves. Milk will talk about how producers can get their organic milk sold," stated Berg.

There is no charge for the accompanying meal. However, persons must pre-register by Monday, Feb. 13 by contacting Berg at 218-846-0736.
