Norman Joseph Jackson, 41, of Minneapolis has been sentenced in Becker County District Court for felony theft.

He was originally charged with felony theft of a motor vehicle and two gross misdemeanor second-degree DWI-related charges.

According to court records, on Nov. 14 he allegedly stole two bottles of E&J brandy from the Ogema liquor store and sped away in a green and white car.

He lost control and hit a fire hydrant, then fled the scene. A police officer found him hiding near some houses in the area. The vehicle owner had not given him permission to use the car.

On Friday, District Judge Joe Evans sentenced him to 17 months in prison, stayed five years. He was ordered to serve 90 days in jail, with credit for 63 days already served.

He must pay fines and restitution totaling $840. He can do community service work in lieu of the fine.

He must get a chemical use assessment and follow the recommendations.
