Minnesota man pleads guilty to shooting girlfriend

A Lake Bronson, Minn., man charged with shooting his girlfriend pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges of reckless discharge of a firearm and third-degree felony assault.

David Eidem, 49, is set to be sentenced Feb. 1 in Hallock, Minn.

Kittson County Attorney Roger Malm said Minnesota sentencing guidelines call for Eidem to serve 2½ years in prison.

According to a criminal complaint, Eidem hit Laura Docken on the arms and legs with a hammer and later shot her, causing her to feel "a burning sensation between her legs."

Docken, 49, Lancaster, Minn., underwent emergency surgery at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks and was later released.

Eidem has been in custody since he was arrested in connection with the June 2009 shooting. In that time, he has undergone a psychological evaluation and been found mentally fit, prosecutors said.
