The Minnesota Department of Transportation reminds motorists to use safe driving skills at all times, especially during extreme winter weather and difficult road conditions.
The northwest area of the state is currently under a wind chill advisory with temperatures dropping throughout the day. The wind is causing blowing, drifting and reduced visibility in some areas of the district. These conditions create snowdrifts, snow clouds, and slippery roads.
Motorists should remember to:
- Slow down, be patient -- allow more travel time to your destination.
- Buckle up -- it's the law and it could save your life.
- Turn on your headlights -- increase your visibility to other motorists.
- Check road conditions -- Go to www.511mn.org or call 511.
- Stay back -- Keep a safe distance from snowplows and other vehicles.
- Stay alert -- Snowplows turn or exit frequently and often with little warning; they may also travel over centerlines or partially in traffic to further improve road conditions.
- Travel prepared -- If you must travel in difficult conditions, fill your gas tank, take your cell phone and charger, and carry a winter survival kit.
