Mom in alleged Walmart DUI must avoid her son

FARGO -- The 23-year-old Mapleton, N.D., mother suspected of being drunk while driving with her son in the car in a Walmart parking lot on Sunday was ordered today to avoid the 4-year-old if she's able to bail out of jail.

Not contacting the child is one of the bail conditions set for Chelsey Jo Hanson, in addition to no alcohol. Cass County District Court Judge Steve Marquart set bail at $1,000 cash or bond.

Cass County State's Attorney Birch Burdick said Hanson's brother and the father of her child told him she's had three encounters with police with the child in tow in as many months. He said they requested the no-contact provision.

Hanson, her son and the boy's father were living together, so she will have to find another place to live, Marquart said.

Court records show that Hanson pleaded guilty to theft on Nov. 12 and was cited for speeding Nov. 18.

After considering pleading guilty to driving under the influence while accompanied by a child, a misdemeanor, Hanson decided to wait until she talked to a lawyer. She told Marquart she is depressed and unemployed and needs help.

"It's a mistake I'll have to live with the rest of my life," Hanson said.
