Two people in a pickup truck were killed in a head-on collision with a semi-truck full of soybeans Monday afternoon on a Polk County road near Fosston, Minn., in one of many accidents caused by near-blizzard conditions across the region.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, a semi hauling beans from the Fosston Elevator was southbound on County Road 6 about 2:10 p.m. Monday, two miles north of Fosston, when it collided with a northbound Chevy Pickup. The impact caused the semi-truck to jack-knife and slide into the east ditch and the pickup came to rest on the edge of the roadway. The pickup's driver and passenger were dead at the scene; both wore seat belts and the air bags deployed, according to the sheriff's office.

No names were released Monday pending the notification of relatives.

The semi driver was not injured. The Minnesota State Patrol assisted in the investigation, which continues.

Visibility was less than a half-mile and the road was snow-covered and slippery at the time of the accident, according to the Patrol.

Similar conditions made driving difficult and dangerous across the Red River Valley on Monday, with high winds and blowing snow making roadways glass-slick at times.

A Highway Patrol dispatcher in Thief River Falls said late Monday night that travel east of Fosston remained very difficult, with many calls about vehicles in ditches from Fosston to Bemidji along U.S. Highway 2 and other areas. But no other accidents with injuries had been reported, the dispatcher said.
