As spring approaches in the Red River Basin, so does the threat of flooding.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency reminds residents that they can minimize pollution risks to their homes and businesses by following a few simple steps before floodwaters arrive.

Store all paints, pesticides, cleaners or other possible pollutants in waterproof containers, if possible in a secure outbuilding.

Fuel oil is lighter than water so your oil tank may float, tip and spill during a flood. In addition to creating possible fire and environmental hazards, the fuel may be absorbed by any porous material, such as wood, cinder block, carpet or sheetrock, within the building.

Once that happens, fuel vapors can persist in the building indefinitely. Secure the tank so it will not tip.

Also, cap the fill and vent pipes so water can't enter the tank and displace fuel into your basement or yard. Better yet, if flooding threatens, have your fuel provider remove the fuel from your tank

Prepare a flood plan for your family that includes evacuation details, local emergency contact information, location of temporary housing, etc.

To report a spill or environmental emergency any time, day or night, call the Minnesota Duty Officer at (800) 422-0798.
