Robert G. Smalley, 86, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, March 31, 2007 at Emmanuel Community Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes.

Robert G. Smalley was born to Reuben and Alma (Knutson) Smalley on May 20, 1920 in Detroit Lakes, where he grew up and received his education, graduating from Detroit Lakes High school. He then served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, as a crew chief. On Jan. 3, 1947 he married Arlene Hanson in Detroit Lakes. In 1949, they moved to San Diego, Calif., where Bob worked for Convair Aircraft. In 1954, they moved back to Detroit Lakes, where Bob purchased the Lincoln Food Market from his father. He operated that store for the next 25 years. On Feb. 11, 1971 he married Ruth McDermott in Detroit Lakes.

His hobbies included bowling, golf, fishing, hunting, and gardening. He was a member of the American Legion John Bridges Post 15 in Detroit Lakes. Bob will always be remembered for his smile and his love of people.

Surviving Bob are his loving companion, Virginia Earley of Detroit Lakes; daughter, Coreen (Tom) Thompson of Frazee; son, Gerry (Suanne) Smalley of Redding, Calif.; two grandchildren; as well as a sister, Florence Clarine of Faribault, Minn.

Preceding Bob in death were his first wife, Arlene (1970); second wife, Ruth (2000); parents; sister, Ethel Smalley; and grandson, Ross Thompson.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, April 7, at United Methodist Church, Detroit Lakes, with Chaplain Vicki Marthaler officiating. There will be visitation for one hour prior to the start of services at the church. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes.
