It's July. Is ice fishing on anyone's mind? Not likely. But it's on the minds of some Detroit Lakes Breakfast Rotary Club members.
"It's hard to think of ice fishing in July, but there's a lot of planning that goes into this," Breanna Adams said.
Adams and fellow Rotarian Nate Hunter are helping organize the first Poles N Holes Fishing Derby, to be held Feb. 12 during Polar Fest.
"It's a trial run for us this year," Hunter said. "We're basically doing it cause there isn't one here anymore."
With a fairly large group of fishermen in the Detroit Lakes and surrounding area, he said there is definitely an interest in a fishing derby, not just as a fund-raiser for Breakfast Rotary.

The event will be held on Little Detroit Lake, and the club is hoping for 2,000 attendees. One big draw: a new truck will be given away. There will also be raffles and T-shirt sales and other prizes.
"Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota -- we don't know where people will come from," Adams said. "It'll be an economic boom for the town that day."
The goal is to have the all-ages derby every year.
Hunter and Adams are working on getting sponsors and the logistics behind the derby. They are asking other clubs to get involved and "make it a real community event," she said.
"We want to have a first-class event so people will come back," Hunter agreed.
Although it's a work in progress at this point, as the event gets closer, the website www.icefishingdl.org will be updated more and more.
