Bryan Klabunde of Waubun was unopposed for the DFL House 2B endorsement at the Senate District 2 DFL Endorsement Convention on Saturday at the Ogema Community Center.

He will face incumbent Rep. Steve Green, R-Fosston, in the November election.

Klabunde, who operates a family farm in Mahnomen County, stressed family values, equity of educational opportunity, the importance of affordable, quality health care for all, and Broadband high-speed internet access for all of rural Minn. as some of the many things he will fight hard for “as your state representative” in St. Paul.

“A well-balanced eco-system is crucial to all aspects of life in rural Minnesota - the economy, recreation, farming and family life depend on it,” Klabunde said. “One for all is my slogan and I intend to be on representative for all of you.”

Incumbent Sen. Rod Skoe, DFL-Clearbrook, was unopposed for the DFL SD 2 Senate Endorsement.

Skoe is the chair of the Tax Committee in the Minnesota Senate, hails from Clearbrook, and runs his family farm in Clearwater County.

He will face Paul Utke - Parks Rapids City Council member and insurance agent - who is seeking the GOP Senate District 2 endorsement.

The SD 2 DFL also held local office elections on Saturday.

Ted Fiskevold of Detroit Lakes was re-elected as chair. “It’s always an honor to be elected as chair of the Senate District DFL,” said Fiskevold, who has been chair or vice chair of the SD 2 DFL since 2002. “And I was chair or vice chair of SD 11 for eight years before that. I haven’t moved, but the districts are restructured every 10 years.”

Pam McCrory of Bemidji was elected vice chair. Becky Colebank of Clearbrook and Monaya Lund of Frazee were elected co-secretaries, and Lon Engberg of Detroit Lakes was elected as treasurer. The district also elected an outreach officer, Samuel Strong of Red Lake.

“One Hundred and thirty-eight delegates voted unanimously for Sen. Skoe. And about 25 guests attended the SD 2 DFL Convention,” Fiskevold said. It was a nice turnout and the Ogema Community Center is a great facility for a convention. We had 49 delegates voting from the House District 2B side of the district who voted unanimously for Candidate Klabunde.”

House District 2B represents all of Mahnomen County, and portions of Hubbard (Park Rapids and South), Clearwater (everything south of Bagley), Becker (not Detroit Lakes), Wadena (around Menahga), and Otter Tail (three northern precincts) counties.

Jerry Loud of Puposky won the DFL endorsement for the House District 2A side of District 2, where 89 delegates reported in. Loud was endorsed with 60 percent of the vote (54-35) on the first ballot over former House 2A Rep. Roger Erickson, a retired teacher from Baudette, said Fiskevold.

Loud, a newcomer to state politics, is the executive director of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program for the Red Lake Band of Chippewa.

A BSU graduate, he is a 10-year veteran of the U.S. Navy. Twenty-seven of the 89 delegates from the 2A side came from the Red Lake Nation.

It is unclear who Loud will face in the Nov. 8 election. On Friday, District 2A Rep. Dave Hancock, R-Bemidji, announced he would not seek re-election this fall.

In 2012, Erickson defeated Hancock and Hancock then won the seat back in 2014.

House District 2A represents portions of Beltrami and Hubbard counties; and all of Lake of the Woods and Clearwater and counties.

The Senate District 2 GOP Endorsing Convention is set for 7 to 9 p.m. March 28 at the Clearwater County Courthouse in Bagley.

There are 67 senate districts in Minnesota, and Senate District 2 is the second-largest district of all.

“It goes from the Northwest Angle of Lake of the Woods County -includes all of that county and all of Clearwater and Mahnomen counties; most of Beltrami County (excluding the City of Bemidji and some surrounding precincts); nearly all of Hubbard County (excluding some northern precincts next to Bemidji); most of Becker county with the exception of Detroit Lakes and four other precincts; the Menahga area of Wadena County; and three precincts in the northern part of Ottertail County. The Red Lake Nation and the White Earth Nation are in SD 2.
