ST. PAUL -- St. Paul police officers responding to a report of death threats early Wednesday shot and killed the suspect, police said.

Police haven't released information about what led to the shooting. No officers were injured.

Officers were called at 2:14 a.m. to the Valley Hi-Rise at 261 E. University Ave., on a report of a man sending death threats to a woman via text message, said Sgt. Paul Paulos, a St. Paul police spokesman. Responding officers were notified that the suspect was known to carry a gun.

Officers found the suspect, multiple shots were fired and the suspect was struck, according to police. Whether the suspect fired shots is part of the investigation, Paulos said. Paramedics responded and pronounced the man dead.

Police have preliminary information about the man's identity, but are working with the Ramsey County medical examiner's office to confirm it.

The officers involved in the shooting -- one has been with the department for seven years and the other for nearly two years -- will be placed on three-day paid administrative leave, which is the department's policy.

The apartment building where the incident happened is part of the St. Paul Public Housing Agency. It's near Interstate 35E and Regions Hospital.
