Stowman appointed to Board of Public Defense

The Supreme Court of Minnesota announced the appointment of Detroit Lakes attorney David Stowman to serve as a member of the State Board of Public Defense.

The Supreme Court of Minnesota announced the appointment of Detroit Lakes attorney David Stowman to serve as a member of the State Board of Public Defense.

The Board of Public Defense is a state agency that supervises the public defender system in Minnesota. By statute, the board is a part of the Judicial Branch of government, but it is not subject to the administrative control of the Supreme Court.

The board approves and recommends a budget to the Legislature, as well as

establishes procedures for

distribution of state funding for the board, the Office of the State Public Defender, judicial district public defenders,

and public defense corporations.

The board also approves standards for these offices and appoints the State Public Defender and all Chief Public Defenders in the state's judicial districts.

Stowman is a certified civil trial specialist and is the immediate past president of the Minnesota State Bar Association.
