Are you looking for a safe way for your young family to experience the excitement of dressing up for Halloween and heading outside to go trick-or-treating - without the worry of small children being unexpectedly frightened by what they encounter while knocking on unfamiliar doors? Then head on over to Christian Fellowship Church in Detroit Lakes on Friday, Oct. 31 for a little old-fashioned Halloween fun - with a few modern twists. The church is once again hosting its “Trunk or Treat” Halloween celebration that Friday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The church’s parking lot will be filled with cars that have their trunks decked out in a variety of Halloween-themed decorations. Instead of going door to door, trick-or-treaters will travel from trunk to trunk, collecting goodies along the way while having an opportunity to vote on their favorite trunks. “There are no scary, bloody or gory decorations allowed,” said event coordinator Kim Ramsey - which means there will be little to no chance for small children to get frightened by what they see and start to cry. “It’s small-child friendly,” she added.
Cars should arrive at the church no later than 5 p.m. for setup, and volunteers are asked to have the majority of their decorating finished or ready for implementation before they arrive. The car owner should have the trunk well-stocked with treats; once empty, the trunk will be closed for the remainder of the event. “It was a fun night last year - we had about 20 cars there,” said Christian Fellowship member Allan Schoenberger, who is also involved in organizing the Halloween event. .The following Sunday, Nov. 2, the winners of the trunk decorating contest will be announced during Christian Fellowship’s morning service, with prizes being awarded for first through fifth place. The “trunker” that gets the most votes will also receive a traveling trophy to be displayed in their home until next Halloween. “It makes it more fun for our church family to get involved,” said Ramsey, explaining the thought behind the “people’s choice” awards. Ramsey added that the Trunk or Treat event is part of Christian Fellowship’s mission outreach, but it is intended to be a community event and not a church-only function. “It is free and open to the public,” she said. (Go to YouTube and search for “life size foosball” if you want to see what such a game might look like.) “And KDLM Radio will be doing a live broadcast during the first hour,” added Schoenberger. “It’s not a religious event, it’s a community event - just a fun night for everybody.” Christian Fellowship Church is located at 28048 Meadow Drive in Detroit Lakes.
