On Tuesday, April 24, members of Education Minnesota, Detroit Lakes honored Robin Turnwall.
Turnwall's peers selected him as recipient of the 2007 Detroit Lakes Teacher of the Year. Turnwall teaches social studies at the Detroit Lakes High School.
Turnwall graduated from Columbia Heights High School and later graduated from Bemidji State University. He remembers when school demands were simpler and more innocent. He was educated in a time of innocence, passion, hippies and causes. School settings were more relaxed, but there was a passion for education.
He has been teaching high school for 34 years, with his first year in Maynard. The last 33 years, he has spent teaching in Detroit Lakes. Turnwall has taught U.S. history, geography, religion, cultural anthropology, physical anthropology, world history, black history, history of technology, community service, cadet teaching, introduction to sociology, social problems, issues in industry, economics, Minnesota law and physical education. He has also coached many sports.
Turnwall is retiring this spring after 34 years. His retirement intentions are to "Explore life without bells."
