Unmarked graves at Fergus Falls State Hospital to be honored

An event to remember, honor, and recognize the many individuals who lived and were buried at the Fergus Falls State Hospital Cemetery, most in unmarked graves, will be held Sept. 20.

An event to remember, honor, and recognize the many individuals who lived and were buried at the Fergus Falls State Hospital Cemetery, most in unmarked graves, will be held Sept. 20.

Self Advocates Minnesota Northwest, the Arc United, and the Friends of the Fergus Falls State Hospital Cemetery have come together to host the 2015 Fergus Falls State Hospital Cemetery Ceremony and Tour “A Ceremony of Remembrance and, Cemetery Tour.”

The event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 20 at the Fergus Falls State Hospital Cemetery in Fergus Falls.

The ceremony will be from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. followed by a reception and cemetery tour from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The ceremony will feature various speakers discussing the history of the Fergus Falls State Hospital and Cemetery. Family members will also be invited to share memories about their loved ones.

Following the ceremony, there will be a reception with refreshments and hors d’oeuvres. There will also be a cemetery tour which features patients that are part of an art exhibit called “From Numbers to Names” presented by Romayne Kilde, a local artist and member of the Friends of the Fergus Falls State Hospital Cemetery.

Parking for the event will be located at the Minnesota Veterans Home (rear parking lot) at 1821 North Park Street.

Upon arriving at the event, transportation will be provided between the Minnesota Veterans Home and the Cemetery, which will start at 12:30 p.m. and will end by 4:30 p.m. There will be limited accessible parking on the cemetery grounds.
