You may be dreading every step you take outside this week with the bitter cold. One local teen is in one of the coldest places on earth and loving every second outdoors.

Lane Loewen of Vergas is just heading home from an expedition in Antarctica.

Being from this far north, we know what the cold is like. Especially during frigid weeks like this. Around this time of year the weather down there is actually pretty comparable to the weather here at home.

“It’s nothing like you could imagine,” said Loewen. “You can see the pictures, but when you see it in real life, it’s so much more. It really sticks out, and it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.”

That beautiful landscape has been the backdrop for Vergas teen Lane Loewen’s Winter break.

“When it became a reality, it just blew my mind,” said Loewen.

He’s on a two week expedition in Antarctica with about five dozen other kids form around the world called Students On Ice. While there he’s exploring, researching and making memories only very few others have ever had.

“Penguins are very social,” said Lowen. “They love to play around with each other. They are very curious of humans. They walk up to you to see who you are. They peck at your boots. It’s very fun.”

And as for the weather, let’s just say being a Midwest boy, he’s prepared.

“At first your just like, ‘It’s just like Minnesota!’ But then it just keeps getting colder and colder and colder,” said Loewen.

And as he makes is journey back home over the next few days, he says this is a trip that changed his life.

“It’s one of those places that you know it’s there but you don’t really acknowledge it, but once you go there you get a deeper understanding and end up falling in love,” he said.

Loewen comes back Thursday and instead of spending some time relaxing at home he’s meeting his family in an airport and heading down to Mexico to get out of this cold for a while.
