A boy who pulled a fire alarm at the Cass County Jail is a little hero in the eyes of county officials.
Sheriff Paul Laney said a "very young" boy was in the lobby with his family during visitation hours earlier this month when he pulled a fire alarm.
Instead of getting in trouble, county officials are thanking the boy for alerting them to a flaw in the system.
The alarm pulled in the old section of the jail didn't activate the alarms in the new section, which was completed in October, Laney said.
The alarms in each section worked but weren't reading back and forth to each other, he said.

County officials had "very frank" discussions with the fire alarm company and "demanded an explanation," Laney said.
The system was promptly fixed, he said.
And the boy?
"We kind of owe him a lifetime supply of candy," Laney said.
