VFW has 'Joy of Sharing' cookbooks

Residents of the lakes area are invited purchase Jess-Omundson VFW Post 1676's the "Joy of Sharing" Cookbook.

It is on sale through March 25. All proceeds will benefit the VFW National Home for Children, an 81-year-old community caring for children and families of veterans.

The cookbook is available at the Post building at 500 Washington Avenue in Detroit Lakes. The cookbook contains 199 recipes from Post/Auxiliary members.

Even the VFW National Home for Children has participated in the creation of the cookbook by contributing recipes. There are historical photos from the National Home as well. Cookbooks are $8.

The VFW National Home for Children has included this project in their national mailings on "Yell the Secret" campaign.

Department National Home Chairman Darrell Olson coordinated the submission of recipes for an Awareness Week Cookbook. He even contacted the National Home for their favorite recipes. Olson and his comrades in Post #1676 and Pup Tent 9 of Detroit Lakes hope to raise $1,000 for the National Home this year.

The Detroit Lakes Post event is being held as part of National Home Awareness Week 2006. Founded in 1925 by VFW and Ladies Auxiliary members from around the country, the National Home is a unique community of individual homes specially designed to care for the children and families of veterans and troops on active duty.

The Detroit Lakes VFW Post 1676 is comprised of 949 community members. The Post is one of 9,000 VFW Posts and Auxiliaries worldwide, which include 2.4 million members.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars is the United States' most prestigious veterans organization, comprised of combat veterans and its Ladies Auxiliary, actively involved in community service and advocacy in their communities.
