Vikings roll Pats 39-15

In the second game of the season, Pelican Rapids had a start very similar to game one, where the Vikings were able to roll over the Perham Yellowjackets.

An early turnover led to a Viking touchdown and a lead that they never gave up, in a 39-15 victory over host Pequot Lakes Friday.

On the third play of the game, Pelican Rapids' McKale Evenson recovered a Pequot Lakes fumble.

Four plays and 40 yards later, the Vikings had their first touchdown of the game when Seth Lage took an option pitch and went in with a 12-yard touchdown run.

The Pelican Rapids defense forced the Patriots into a three and out on the next possession, setting up the offense with good field position to begin their second scoring drive of the game.

Matthew Skow-Anderson made a great catch in the end zone on an 18-yard pass from Tydan Storrusten.

The drive used only two plays to cover 55 yards.

After forcing the Vikings to punt, Pequot Lakes put together a touchdown drive of their own to keep things close in the first half.

A Jeff Redmond pass to Bryan Kittleson and following extra point kick made the score 13-7.

Pelican Rapids came back strong, scoring two more times before halftime to give them a 26-7 lead at the break.

Storrusten connected with Sam Krueger for a 23-yard touchdown.  With one minute left in the half, Storrusten found Matt Haugen for a 45-yard touchdown pass.

Pelican Rapids received the opening kick of the second half and put together an 11-play, 62-yard touchdown drive to get the last half off to a strong start.

Evenson scored on a seven-yard run.  The last touchdown of the game for the Vikings was an eight-yard pass to Eric Shulstad from Storrusten.

Pequot Lakes kept battling, and got on the board again with just over five minutes left in the game when Redmond hit Matt Michaelson on a 35-yard touchdown pass.

"Our defense did a very good job of limiting what Pequot Lakes was able to do," said Pelican Rapids head coach Dave Haugen. "The Patriots were able to come with only 56 yards of offense in the first half."

Evenson had a strong game defensively by being in on a team high 17 tackles, and had the early fumble recovery.

"The front seven played very well, as the defensive secondary as a unit was in on very few tackles," Haugen included. "I was real pleased with the balance of our offense in virtually every category."

Evenson was the leading rusher, with most of his yards coming up the middle.

"We were also able to generate yards by running other backs to the outside and completing passes to seven different receivers.

"The six touchdowns were scored by six different players."

The Vikings gained 211 yards rushing and 212 yards passing.
