We are called the Baby Boomers Generation. We already have half a century of living behind us and are told that we are heading for our golden years.

It will be, they say, the time to enjoy good health, luxuries, freedom. We will bask in the comforts of an easy existence we so richly deserve. We will spend our days pursuing our dreams and embracing new endeavors. For some of us, all those wonderful plans will come true. But unfortunately, for many others, this promised land will be just a mirage.

As I was visiting a friend at a nursing home the other day, I realized that equality of opportunity does not exist as it is portrayed in magazines or on television.

During my visit, I saw people in wheelchairs, sitting there, staring into space, others needing assistance for the smallest tasks. I did not see any smiles or heard joyous chatter.

Their memory is fading and their ability to communicate diminishes. Some are lucky enough to have caring families who see them regularly. Others are left here with no loved ones to brighten up their lonely days.

Aging is not for the faint of heart. What is so golden about being dependent upon others for most of your basic needs?

Thank God for the dedicated personnel who takes good care of these men and women too old or too frail to provide for themselves. The vitality of their lives is slipping away. The end of their journey is approaching and there will be no golden moments for them.

This visit was a reality check and it humbled me. It showed me our limitations as human beings and made me realize that nothing is guaranteed in this aging process.
