Cardinals pull away from DL in second half

Emma Schmidt scored all 14 of her points in the second half to lead the defending section champion Alexandria Cardinals to a 51-31 victory over Detroit Lakes in 8AAA girls basketball at Ralph Anderson Gymnasium Thursday night.

DL’s Lauren Tschider scored eight of her team-high 12 points in the first half as the teams played even ball to a 19-15 Cardinals lead at the break.

Alex turned up the defense in the second half holding the Lakers to only 15 points while nearly doubling their own output for the 20-point spread at the final horn.

Bre Price scored eight points; Haidyn Gunderson added four. Anna Cihak made her first varsity appearance at home this season and scored a field goal in the second half. Lauryn Manning was held to one point.

DL shot 12-22 (55 percent) from the line and scored the remainder of their points from inside the arc. Alex made nine of 13 free throw attempts and sank five threes in the game.

The Cardinals improved to 4-1 overall and held the Lakers (0-5) to their lowest offensive output this season. Detroit Lakes returns to Mid-State Conference action at Park Rapids (3-0) Friday, Dec. 15. The Panthers are going for a fourth straight conference win to start the season after defeating Crosby-Ironton, Aitkin and Staples-Motley.
