UPDATED: Man dead, Duluth police officer injured, K-9 killed in Skyline shooting
A man is dead and a Duluth police officer was injured in a shootout Sunday evening on Skyline Parkway.
Duluth police responded to a report of a “felony-level” domestic assault at a home on the 1000 block of West Skyline Parkway just before 6:30 p.m. Sunday, police said in a news release. Officers negotiated with a man in the home for about an hour before he began firing at them, striking one officer and killing a police dog. At least one officer returned fire.
Police then gained access to the room where the man was located and found him dead. Spokeswoman Ingrid Hornibrook said police aren’t sure exactly how the man died, and no further details were available Sunday night.
The officer’s injuries were not life-threatening, the release said, and he has been released from the hospital.
Skyline Parkway was blocked off to traffic for several hours Sunday night as police worked at the scene.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is conducting an investigation into the shooting.
