Joseph Howell

Joseph Matthew Howell, 70, Detroit Lakes, MN died Saturday, February, 26th, 2022.
Joseph Matthew Howell was born October 16, 1951 in Oakes, ND to Joseph and Virginia (Mikkelson) Howell. He graduated from Lisbon High School in 1969, attended Minot State University, and graduated from Jamestown College in 1976 with a degree in Education. Joe participated in football and baseball while attending Jamestown College and remained very close to his teammates through the years. Joe married Sandy (Fluto) Asche and raised two sons in Lisbon. Joe taught and coached in Lisbon for 37 years before retiring. He often stated “he bled red and gold and was proud to be a Bronco for life.” Joe loved all things “Lisbon” and he viewed the entire community as family. Joe was lucky to find love again and married Carmen Jerlow on June 29, 2007. Upon retirement, they found a little piece of heaven on Little Floyd Lake in Detroit Lakes, MN where they lived, laughed, and loved.
Joe was a fun loving, spontaneous, carefree man who told the best stories and possessed an unmatched ability to remember everyone’s name and put others’ needs ahead of his own. It didn’t matter if it had been days or years since your last conversation with Joe, the conversations resumed like no time had passed. Joe was heavily involved in his community, loved his buddies, and attended school related sports and music programs. Joe was a dedicated teacher and coach who pushed his students and athletes to be better than the previous day. Joe was authentic. Joe didn’t spend time worrying about other people’s opinion of him. He instead, spent that time investing in his students, friends, family, and even strangers. Joe loved his friends, whether it involved golfing, fishing, playing cards, or a quick call to check-in. He was the ultimate father, grandpa, husband, brother, uncle, friend, and coach. Joe took great pride in his family and took great joy in sharing stories of his brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and children, but he was most proud of his grandchildren, Tierney, Sutton, Ava, Olivia, and Eleanor.
Joe is survived by his sons, Matt (Casey; Tierney, and Sutton) Howell, West Fargo, ND, Chris (Amy; Eleanor) Howell Moorhead, MN, Katie (Jason; Ava, and Olivia) Baskin, Austin, MN, Paige (Mike) Barbero, Boise, ID; brothers, Mike (Kela) Howell, West Fargo, ND, Bill (Lynette) Howell, Prosser, WA, Tom (Kathleen) Howell, Sun City West, AZ, Dan Howell, Frazee, MN, sisters Margaret (Tom) Zidon, Nelson, MN, Cathy (Arden) Howey, Beaver Dam, WI, Ginny (Neil) Heinitz, East Wenatchee, WA.
