Letter: Life is good, with good friends in DL

On Oct. 15 I had my annual physical exam with Dr. Kulasingham and a 3-D mammogram. Went home like usual ... that's done for another year. Life is good!

The next day I got a call from Essentia Health saying that they would like me to come back for another mammogram and possibly an ultrasound. That was the beginning of a new journey for me. I had a small lump in my left breast. There were tests including a biopsy. I was given options for removal of the malignant tumor, choice of doctors and places for the surgery.

I was given much information, many choices, never hurried. I was assured that at any time I had a question, I should call. I had my doctors' numbers and My Essentia Health account.

Now I had to do some research of my own. After visiting with two friends who research everything (why reinvent the wheel?) Dr. Bolar, a surgeon, came highly recommended, as did Dr. Ben Smith. I had surgery at St. Mary's Hospital on Friday, Oct. 26.

My husband, Dave, and I love Detroit Lakes. We often comment on how blessed we have been to be a part of this community. My experience is one more example of how professional, trustworthy, and caring people are. My experiences reflect my care at one local clinic, but Dave uses Sanford and they have also taken very good care of him. We have wonderful resources in the medical field, senior care, churches, businesses, opportunities to get involved and help those in need. We now have an opportunity to support our school system ... our future.

We are in a small enough community to have and to be friends. I once heard that "Good friends are like stars. You don't always see them, but you know they're always there."

Life is good!
