COLUMN FROM THE INTERN: About me, myself and I

As a writer, I want to give people fun and creative stories that make them smile – whether that be through journalism, scriptwriting, video game writing, or being a novelist. My name is Ashton Anderson, and I'm currently interning at the Detroit Lakes Tribune.

BANG!

Great, now that I have your attention, I can introduce myself.

My name is Ashton Anderson, and I am the Tribune’s newest (and only) high school intern. I’ll be interning for the rest of the semester, and will be writing a recurring column while I’m here, covering some stories from inside the school, sharing a few of my personal opinions on things, and writing a few fun pieces that you won’t want to take too seriously.

A little bit about me: I am a high school senior at Detroit Lakes High School, and have lived in Detroit Lakes my entire life. I have grown to love this place, and enjoy exploring it on bike rides throughout town – from the beautiful beaches (great for skipping rocks at), the many great places to eat (while enjoying a good novel), and the thrift stores to shop at (for clothes and other great deals).

For all my life, I have loved cartoon-style artforms: graphic novels, animation, video games, and just drawing for myself, creating my own creatures and magical worlds within my imagination. I have always liked creating, and I have tried to find ways to bring my ideas into the real world – from an attempted ‘go’ at animation to a terrible try at video game programming (which just made me feel hatred toward computers) – but these attempts haven’t really worked out for me. My ‘go’ at writing has been different.

Like most kids, I’ve been writing since elementary school, but it was during my later years of middle school that I really started to turn into ‘a writer.’ I started reading more, and the many books I read sparked my imagination. I began writing down whatever strange or funny thoughts entered my brain: superhero stories, book ideas, or ideas for literary characters – weird little creatures, usually – that could exist in a world of my making. I’ve even developed new, unique languages that could be spoken in these imaginary worlds.

Now I have set my future goal toward becoming an author. I want to give people fun and creative stories that make them smile – whether that be through journalism, scriptwriting, video game writing, or being a novelist.

I decided to take up an internship at the Tribune to further my writing knowledge, as well as to gain some new knowledge about how things work in the world of journalism.

And so, dear readers, I hope you have enjoyed my little introduction into my world. I hope to make you smile with my future writings.
