For the past two seasons, with the help of the Minnesota Section PGA, our foundation, Growth of the Game, has been able to host the Drive, Chip, and Putt competition. A young boy or girl ages 7-14 competes at the local, sub-regional and regional sites. The lucky and skillful ones continue on at Augusta National in April to try to become a national champion in their age division. It’s exciting to watch the young ones who have honed their skills in three specific areas of the game.

Last year we hosted a local qualifier with kids from Park Rapids, Dilworth, Hawley, Fargo-Moorhead, etc. We had close to 150 participants. It went so well that we submitted a request for the sub-regional site in 2019, Aug. 23.

This is where the plan went better than expected. These families were not local! They came from Canada, Texas, Pennsylvania, Florida, all over Minnesota and North Dakota. Did we impact the economy of Detroit Lakes in a positive way? We had 120 participants, I would guess 70 to 90 of those families reserved a hotel room, ate dinner at one of our many fine restaurants, maybe a movie, Dairy Queen and possibly lunch on the way out of town?

Wow, I think we positively impacted the economy of Detroit Lakes for two days in late August. It was a great day of competition. I can only hope we can host a Drive, Chip, and Putt at Lakeview Golf Course again, soon.
