Patriots sweep at DL triangle

Pequot Lakes swept both varsity races at the second Detroit Lakes cross country triangular at the high school Thursday, Sept. 3.

The Patriot boys put all five scoring runners in the top six and were negated from a perfect score by Long Prairie-Grey Eagle’s Joe Liebsch in third place.

Detroit Lakes had three top 10 finishes by junior Cole Weber (7th, 19:28.5) and seniors John Bergum (8th, 19:31.1) and Ryan Bergum (10th, 19:34.5).

DL’s scoring quintet was rounded out by junior Clint Andresen (20:04.2) and senior Jacob Trout (20:48.6) just outside the top 10 in 11th and 12th places, respectively.

Pequot Lakes junior Jesse Clausen set the pace with a winning 5k time of 18:02.5.

The Lakers finished second with 48 points. The Patriots won with 18. Long Prairie-Grey Eagle was third with 73.

The Patriot girls scored 19 to win, while Long Prairie-Grey Eagle and Detroit Lakes came down to the wire with the visitors edging out the Lakers by two points 52-54 for second place.

Pequot freshman Calia Chaney was the lone runner under 20-minutes with a winning time of 19:51.6.

LP-GE freshman Caroline Kuehne (20:42.3) placed second in front of the next four Patriot runners in third through sixth place.

DL senior Katie McConkey led the Lakers with a seventh place time of 23:55.4. Joining McConkey in the top 10 were sophomores Lilly Baethke (9th, 24:16.1) and Julia Steffl (10th, 24:35.1).

Juniors McKenna Mallow (26:06.6) and Emma Teiken (26:29.6) added scoring runs for DL in 13th and 15th places, respectively.

All three teams will see each other again at the Mid-State Conference meet Oct. 8. The Staples-Motley Cardinals are the defending champions in both divisions. Detroit Lakes boys were runners-up last year; the girls placed third.

In Thursday underclassmen races, Carson Simison led the DL boys to the Junior High title with a first place finish, while Sadie Johnson did the same for the Laker girls team.

Micah Barberg recorded the top DL junior varsity finish in fourth place. Pequot took the team title 22 to DL’s 34.

In girls JV, Pequot’s Isabel Larson (24:34.9) held off DL’s Kate Taves (26:46.8) as the duo took the top two spots.
