Section 8AA Hockey: Spuds seeded No. 3 in state hockey bracket

The Moorhead Spuds boys hockey team will play Hill-Murray at 1 p.m. Thursday in the opening round of the Minnesota State High School Class AA Hockey Tournament in St. Paul.

Moorhead advanced by beating rival Roseau 6-0 Wednesday, March 1 in the Section 8AA championship game in Thief River Falls.

The Spuds were seeded as the No. 3 team in the tournament. Hill-Murray was not seeded.

Moorhead, 22-3-3, beat Hill-Murray 4-3 in overtime in Moorhead to end the regular season. The Spuds haven't given up a goal since the second period of that game, earning shutouts in 175 minutes since, including three Section 8 playoff games.

If Moorhead wins on Thursday, they will play the winner of No. 2 St. Thomas Academy and Lakeville South at 6 p.m. Friday night.

Other matchups in the opening round of the AA tournament are No. 1 Eden Prairie and unseeded Wayzata, and No. 4 Maple Grove and No. 5 Grand Rapids. All first-round games are at the Xcel Energy Center.

This is Moorhead's 15th trip to the state hockey tournament. The Spuds have never won state. It has been runner-up seven times, the most of any team at state.
