Laker tennis ousted by Green Wave

No. 4 East Grand Forks knocked the No. 5 Detroit Lakes tennis team out of the Section 8A playoffs in a close 4-3 first round dual in Fergus Falls Monday.

“It was a rough way to end our season,” Laker head coach Tanner Beauchman said. “Even though we were the higher seed, we felt like we had a great chance to win this one.”

The two teams met in the regular season with East Grand Forks taking all four singles matches, while the Lakers swept in doubles. That played into the strategy for the playoff opener.

“We swept them in doubles and felt like we could do that again,” said Beauchman. “We knew we had to find a singles win to give ourselves a chance.”

Detroit Lakes got that singles win when Adam Daggett defeated Parker Anderson 6-3, 7-6. Green Wave singles players took the remaining three matches. Ben Kern defeated Austin Baker two and two in the top spot. Hunter Olson won at two-singles over DL’s Garrett Knopf three and two. Blake Fetch defeated Isaac Eggebraaten one and three in the fourth match.

Daggett has played all over the lineup this season and gave DL a chance to advance to the second round.

“When we needed a big win, Adam came through all season,” Beauchman said. “Unfortunately, we couldn't get the doubles sweep to secure the win. Our number two and three doubles teams were dominant. They played really well.”

DL’s doubles victories came quickly in straight sets. Conner Froke and Tanner Doppler took out Justin Marciniak and Justus Gauss (EGF) one and one. Jake Hanson and Braeden Wimmer took the first set at love and the second 6-3 to defeat Justin Smerer and Noah Benjamin.

“We struggled to find momentum in the number one match,” Beauchman said. “It was a back and forth match, but it just wasn't our day.”

Trey Seebold and Gabe Hanninen were certainly in the top double match falling in a first set tiebreak to Tucker Brown and Tyler Schauer. The second set was decided by one break of serve 6-4.

The Section tournament continues with individual play beginning Tuesday, May 23 at noon in Fergus Falls.
