Laura Januszewski hadn’t run the Fargo Marathon 10K before, but she knew the course well. The former North Dakota State track standout did many training runs on that path.
“We used to run the 10K route all the time for our workout so it was kind of fun to go back,” said Januszewski, who now lives in Pelican Rapids, Minn., and coaches track and field at Lake Park-Audubon high school.
The 31-year-old crossed the finish line in 39 minutes, 7 seconds to win the race by about a minute. Cortney Christensen of Hallock, Minn., was second in a time of 40:04.
“It’s a really cool route. I like it a lot,” Januszewski said. “Fargo was home for me for eight years so it was really fun.”
Branden Scheel won the men’s race in a time of 33:01. He finished ahead of Brendan Skime of Thief River Falls, Minn., who ran a time of 33:53. Skime won the men’s 10K last year, finishing ahead of Scheel.
“I think there is a fun little rivalry,” said Scheel, a Fargo Davies graduate who used to run at NDSU. “We’re really happy competing with each other.”
Januszewski was an 800-meters ace while at NDSU, completing her college track career in 2009. She is now a track coach at Lake Park-Audubon, and is married with two kids.
“I don’t have a ton of time to run and train, but it’s fun to get out and race sometimes,” said Januszewski, who has competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials for track and field.
The 10K started after the full and half-marathon so the top 10K runners got a chance to run through some of the competitors in the longer races.
“I really liked coming through the marathoners,” Januszewski said. “It creates a really, really cool running community.”
“I think the coolest thing is running by the half-marathoners, the full marathoners and just the support they give out for each other and every single runner,” Scheel said.
Even though he was hoping to run a better time, Scheel enjoyed running on his home course.
“I absolutely love it,” he said. “There nothing more amazing than coming into this with your home crowd in your hometown. … The finish is just beautiful. There is no feeling like it.”
